AIR QUALITY PROGRAM

To promote innovative approaches to reduce emissions

Local air quality is influenced by local and regional transportation and commercial emissions.  Changing individual behaviors, increasing the use of locally-produced alternative fuels like ethanol and biodiesel, and improving the mass transit options for the region will play important roles in the drive for cleaner air.

CURRENT ACTIVE PROJECTS

Retail Alternative Fuel station location in cumberland county

Fort Bragg has plans to construct an alternative fuels station on post for use by military vehicles.  The Combined Air Team (CAT) is working to find a public commercial location in Cumberland County to provide E-85 fuels.

No-Idle policy at CCS

To promote improved Air Quality, the State of North Carolina is working to implement a ‘no-idle’ policy at Cumberland County Schools.  The goal is to start this program at the beginning of the 2008-2009 school year.  Schools are currently being surveyed to determine the best pilots for the program.

Local fleet conversion to alternate fuels

The Fayetteville Public Works Commission (PWC) is currently in the process of evaluating and implementing a conversion of their fleet to alternative fuels.  PWC’s conversion will provide a resource for other businesses considering a conversion in the future.

Update FAST schedules at bus stops

One of the key ways to increase ridership on public transit is to inform riders of transit availability.  FAST is currently working to update signage at stops to provide more information to the public.

Fort Bragg Heritage Village

Fort Bragg’s Heritage Village is located farther away from the active portion of Fort Bragg than most on-post housing.  Fort Bragg is working to implement a mass transit system for this location.

Promote FAST Route 40

FAST Route 40 connects to the Fort Bragg bus system.  The Combined Air Team is working to promote this route to improve ridership in the hopes of increasing the number of trips available to riders.

FUTURE PROJECTS

Action Day plan

We are looking for businesses/organizations that are willing to allow us to send an email to all of their employees on Orange (or higher) Action Days to inform the employees what they could/should do. The following organizations have committed: Cape Fear Valley Hospital, Fort Bragg, Cumberland County, City of Fayetteville, Cumberland County Libraries, PWC, and Sustainable Sandhills.

Weekly news blurbs

The Combined Air Team hopes to partner with a local newspaper, or several newspapers, in order to publish weekly green tips for the readership.

Air Quality Ads on FAST Buses

FAST is getting five (5) new buses this summer.  All the buses will have panels on which to place signs.  The CAT is working to have Air Quality signs put up when there is no paid advertisement.  There are four sets of “seasonal” ads;" \three versions each. Plans are to have all 12 printed so they can be switched out every three months to keep the message fresh.

Regional Park and Ride

Throughout the region there are many concerns regarding the increase in traffic accessing Fort Bragg.  A regional park-and-ride may help to improve congestion issues.
