Event Summary
The second annual GBST was co-hosted by Sustainable Sandhills and the NC Solar Energy Association. Four private homes and the Southern Pines Welcome Center were open to the public at no charge. The homes showcased included a straw bale house, a photovoltaic electric system home, a solar-heated lap pool, a solar hot water system and many other energy-saving features. We had at least 100 people join the Tour this year compared with 22 last year. We hope to include a GBST in Cumberland County during next year's Tour.

Moore County Green Building & Solar Tour
The Second Annual Moore County Green Building and Solar Tour!
Join us on Saturday, October 13 from 10am-2pm and visit four of the greenest homes in Moore County. Our Tour Headquarters is the Southern Pines Welcome Center at 235 South Broad in historic downtown Southern Pines. But you can start anywhere - each tour stop will have a yard sign to help you find it, and links to maps are available below.
Short summaries and maps to each tour site are shown below.
TOUR HEADQUARTERS

Southern Pines Welcome Center
235 Broad Street, Southern Pines
The recently-restored Amtrak station downtown will serve as the Tour headquarters, with tour maps, energy efficiency information, interactive displays for visitors, as well as periodic drawings for compact fluorescent lights and other energy and water saving-fixtures.
DOUGHERTY Home

170 Yadkin Run Lane, Southern Pines
Robert and Bonnie Dougherty's beautiful home is in the heart of Moore County horse country, and is tucked right up against some of Fort Bragg's natural areas. Their backyard lap pool is heated by a set of roof-mounted solar panels. Bring your bathing suits! [just kidding]
Directions: Get yourself onto Youngs Road. Watch for Goodwill Road - turn off of Youngs Road onto Goodwill Road. There will be a yard sign there and it's across the street from a small home with shutters.
Bear straight ahead on Goodwill, going down a long hill. You're off the pavement now.
Turn left at the bottom, where Yadkin Run Lane begins.
Take first right and follow the yard signs!
LEITSCHUH Home

3939 Youngs Road, Southern Pines
Jan Leitschuh's home includes a solar hot water system, a drip irrigation system for her organic garden, a couple of Solutube daylighting fixtures, Energy Star applicances and CFL's throughout. The FAMOUS Cottage Garden Farm is in her backyard - so prepare to hear the gospel on local organic produce from one of the region's most passionate (and practicing) advocates. AMEN.
Jan's home is on the south side of Youngs Road between Den Road and Piney Lane, just about in the middle of this map.
Look for the yard sign!
You WON'T see her house from the street.
KING Home

165 North Ridge Street, Southern Pines
Did you know there was an Electric Power Plant masquerading as a two-story home right under our noses on Ridge Street in Southern Pines?? That's the home of Dr. Steve King - with a 2.4 kilowatt solar electric system mounted on top of the garage, and tied into the very same electric grid that your home is tied to. King is selling his solar-generated electrons to NCGreenPower for more than twice the amount he pays Progress Energy for their coal & nuclear-generated ones! Stop by and watch him silently "print money" before your very eyes.
Please don't attempt to enter the yard from Ridge Street. Park and enter from the extension of East New Hampshire Ave.
HOLT Home

551 South Middleton Street, Robbins
Meet Terri Holt and her fearless daughter Eden, and tour their amazing straw-bale home in Robbins. They designed it themselves, and we promise you there's nothing like it anywhere in the region. In addition to the super efficient straw-bale wall construction, other green features include a 2.4kW off-grid solar PV system, a tankless, on-demand water heater, daylight-tube fixtures, EnergyStar appliances, CFL's throughout, and a compost tumbler in the back yard garden. That's the last straw!
Watch for yard signs on South Middleton Street. Once you've made the turn our signs should lead you in.
