Sustainable Sandhills hosted the first Southern Pines Green Building & Solar Tour on Saturday, October 7, 2006, as part of the American Solar Energy Society’s National Tour. Twenty-two people attended the tour, which included two green homes in Southern Pines and the nationally- renowned Blanchie Carter Discovery Park at Southern Pines Primary School, designed by Robin Moore from NCSU. Thanks to the visitors, homeowners, our volunteers, and our partners NCSEA, for making the day a great success!

SOUTHERN Pines Green Building & Solar Tour

The 1st Annual Southern Pines Green Building & Solar Tour, Saturday October 7, 2006, from 10am-4pm.  FREE!

Thanks to our partner on this inaugural tour - NCSEA (the NC Sustainable Energy Association) - and to the gracious homeowners and Moore County Schools for opening their doors to the public to observe some rare examples of green building in the Sandhills! 

You can take the tour in any sequence you'd like.  Just watch out for the set tour times at the Primary School.  The locations on the tour are:

Jan Leitschuh Residence, 3939 Youngs Road.  Open house from 10am-4pm.  Energy Star certified, with solar hot water system and Solatube skylights.

Dr. Fred McCashin Residence, 2445 Youngs Road.  Open house from 10am-4pm.  Passive solar design and solar hot water system circa 1980. 

Blanchie Carter Discovery Park at Southern Pines Primary School, 1250 West New York Ave.  Guided tours at 10am, noon, and 2pm.
