Q. Where are the Sustainable Sandhills Farmers Markets?
A. Sustainable Sandhills currently operates three farmers markets at Carolina Lakes community in western Harnett County (1st, 3rd and 5th Fridays), Cape Fear Botanical Garden (every Saturday) and the Saleeby Family YMCA in western Harnett County (every Monday).

Q. Who may apply to vend at the Sustainable Sandhills Farmers Markets?
A. Any local farmer, artisan, crafter or entrepreneur who produces a product within a 100 mile radius of Fayetteville, North Carolina is welcome to apply! We are looking for meat, produce (fruits and vegetables), baked goods, pet foods, jams and jellies, soaps, candles, jewelry, two dimensional and three dimensional art, home goods, fiber crafts, glass and more. Food trucks are welcome to apply for the Carolina Lakes and YMCA markets as well.
We understand that some components of your products and their packaging may be imported. We only ask that finished products are produced locally.
Q. I sell direct sales or multilevel marketing products (such as Scentsy, Paparazzi, Lularoe and Pampered Chef). May I apply to vend at the markets?
A. The Sustainable Sandhills markets are locals markets, so we do not permit the sale of MLM, direct sales or mass produced goods at this time. We also do not permit resales of commercially produced or branded goods (such as branded sodas and snacks). Thank you for understanding.
Q. Do I need a tax ID, license or insurance to sell at the markets?
A: Vendors are not required to provide a business license or federal tax ID to Sustainable Sandhills in order to sell. All tax filings with the state and IRS (including the collection of sales tax) are the sole responsibility of the vendor. Vendors who sell edible or consumable products (such as foods, beverages, edible plants, soaps and cosmetics) must carry certain licenses, certifications and insurance policies to vend at the markets. Many valuable resources are available from the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services HERE. All applicable licenses, certifications and insurance forms MUST be on file with Sustainable Sandhills before you may vend.
Q: What is the cost to vend at a Sustainable Sandhills Farmers Market?
A. Every potential vendor must submit an application for $25. The application fee is non-refundable.
We collect a market vending fee at each market. The weekly vending fee is $15 for the YMCA and Cape Fear Botanical Garden and $20 for Carolina Lakes. All market fees are non-refundable unless we close the market due to inclement weather conditions or other extenuating circumstances. Market fees are due to Sustainable Sandhills regardless of your sales.
Q. Do I have to commit to every market date?
A. No! Vendors may join us for the entire market season or choose specific dates on a rotating basis. Vendors who choose to participate in the entire market season receive a $25 discount when they pay their weekly vending fees in full.
Q. What happens if I cannot attend my scheduled market date?
A. Simply contact the market manager at firstname.lastname@example.org 24 hours prior to the market at which you were scheduled. We’ll work with you to reschedule your date.
In case of an emergency on market day, please contact the market manager as soon as possible.
No-shows may be charged their weekly vending fee.
Q. Do the markets open during inclement weather?
A. Our farmers markets are typically open rain or shine. For the safety of our vendors and guests, we may close the market due to significant inclement weather events – such as lightning, heavy rain and flooding or strong winds – at the discretion of our market manager and venue manager. Market closures or delays will be conveyed to vendors in a timely manner.
Q. I want to sell my products at the farmers market, but I cannot attend the market in person. Are there any options to sell?
A. Yes! Sustainable Sandhills manages a cooperative for any local producers who wish to participate. Call 910-484-9098 for details. At this time, we cannot accept products that require refrigeration for cooperative sales.
Q. How do farmers markets fit in to the COVID-19 considerations for small businesses?
A. Farmers markets are considered essential businesses in the state of North Carolina, despite COVID-19 restrictions. Therefore, we are allowed to operate. There is no evidence that COVID-19 is transmitted through food. We do encourage our vendors and customers to practice all public health and safety guidelines issued for farmers markets by the State of North Carolina. Vendors are encouraged to wear masks in close spaces where social distancing is not possible and sanitize their booths regularly.
Customers should avoid shopping in groups and shop with as few household members as possible. Customers should form lines at vendor booths at least six feet apart from other customers and wear a mask if social distancing is not possible. Customers should also avoid touching items that they do not intend to purchase. Ultimately, customers are responsible for following social distancing guidelines. Sustainable Sandhills is not responsible for issuing social distancing guidance outside the perimeter of the market.
